Understanding your symptoms

Many people search online when they notice new heart symptoms, but this can also lead to confusion and worry as you try and self-diagnose.

Here are some of the most common reasons my patients come to see me:

Chest pain or tightness
Chest pain can have many causes, some are harmless, but others, like angina, need careful assessment. If you have chest pain, especially on exertion, it’s important to be reviewed promptly.

Palpitations or fluttering in the chest
A racing heartbeat, irregular rhythm or flutters are common, and often not serious. Sometimes they are caused by arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation, which can be diagnosed with tests like an ECG or Holter monitor.

Shortness of breath
Breathlessness may be due to lung or fitness issues, but it can also be a sign of heart problems such as heart failure, valve disease or high blood pressure.

Dizziness or fainting
These symptoms may point to rhythm disturbances or blood pressure issues, and should always be taken seriously.

Swollen ankles
Fluid retention in the ankles or legs can be a sign of circulation or heart function problems and should be checked.

Fatigue
Persistent tiredness may be due to lifestyle factors, but sometimes it reflects underlying heart conditions that need investigation.
